A Winter Weekend in Beech Mountain, NC

Snowy mountain views, days on the slopes, après-ski drinks, and cozy nights by the fire—Beech Mountain makes an easy winter escape without leaving North Carolina. Here’s how we’d spend a long weekend on the mountain.

THE WEEKEND LIST | BEECH MOUNTAIN, NC
Best for: Winter getaways + couples trips
Best time: December–March
Perfect for: Thursday–Sunday

WHERE TO STAY | Beech Mountain

For this trip, we recommend staying right on Beech Mountain and close to the resort. Look for a cabin or condo around Skiway Road or Charter Hills Road with a fireplace, mountain views, and—bonus points—a hot tub. Being close to the slopes makes ski mornings easier and means you can come back to the cabin between adventures.

Prefer a hotel-style stay? The Pinnacle Inn Resort is another option right on Beech Mountain, with condo-style accommodations and easy access to the resort and town.

Weekend List tip: When booking a winter rental, check the driveway and road-access details in the reviews. Snowy mountain driveways are not where we want a surprise.

KNOW BEFORE YOU SKI | Beech Mountain Resort

Parking: Beech Mountain Resort has three main parking lots at the base area. Parking is first-come, first-served, so on busy winter weekends, arriving early is worth it. The resort also uses overflow/public parking areas with complimentary shuttles for ticket holders when needed.

Tickets + rentals: Once you’re at the base, head into the resort village for your tickets and equipment. Ski and snowboard rentals are available right at the resort, so there’s no need to rent elsewhere and haul everything up the mountain. Standard ski rentals include skis, boots, bindings and poles; snowboard rentals include the board, boots and bindings. Helmets can be rented separately.

Lockers: Daily lockers are available near the rental area for your shoes and personal belongings while you’re on the mountain. Beech actually recommends using one, and I would too—walking back to the car in ski boots because you forgot something is not part of The Weekend List itinerary!

Buy your lift tickets and reserve rentals before your trip, then arrive early. Parking and rental equipment can be limited during busy periods, and having everything arranged beforehand makes that first ski morning significantly easier.

Weekends at Beech Mountain Resort can get busy, and Saturday is typically the day to expect the biggest crowds. If you’re a beginner or still getting comfortable on skis, we recommend making Friday your main ski day when possible and using Saturday for tubing, exploring the mountain, or another winter activity. More experienced skiers may feel more comfortable navigating the busier Saturday slopes and lift lines.

THURSDAY | ARRIVE + SETTLE IN

Thursday is for getting up the mountain and settling in.

If you’re skiing Friday, use tonight to make sure your lift tickets and rentals are ready to go so you aren’t figuring everything out first thing in the morning.

If you’re staying in an Airbnb or vacation rental, grab groceries, drinks, firewood, and any essentials before heading all the way up Beech Mountain. There are places to pick up basics once you’re there—including Fred’s General Mercantile—but selection is more limited than what you’ll find before heading up the mountain. Stock the cabin for breakfasts, snacks, après-ski drinks, and at least one easy dinner so you can actually enjoy those cozy nights in.

FRIDAY | HIT THE SLOPES

Beech Mountain Resort

COFFEE | First Chair Coffee Shop

Start with coffee at First Chair Coffee Shop before heading to Beech Mountain Resort. Grab something warm and caffeinated, then make your way to the slopes.

SKI | Beech Mountain Resort

Friday is our full ski day at Beech Mountain Resort.

Get there early, pick up your equipment if you’re renting, and spend the morning skiing before the mountain gets busier.

LUNCH | 5,506′

Take your ski break at 5,506′, the resort’s mountaintop spot. The real reason we’re stopping here is the setting—you get to eat and grab a drink at 5,506 feet above sea level with mountain views surrounding you.

5,606’

Then get a few more runs in before calling it for the day.

APRÈS-SKI | Beech Mountain Brewing Co.

Once the skis come off, head to Beech Mountain Brewing Co. at the resort.

Grab a locally brewed beer, warm up, and enjoy a proper après-ski break before heading back to your rental to change for dinner.

DINNER | Famous Brick Oven Pizzeria

After a full day outside, we’re keeping dinner casual.

Head to Famous Brick Oven Pizzeria for pizza before retreating back to the cabin.

SATURDAY | ONE MORE MOUNTAIN DAY

BREAKFAST | Fred’s Backside Deli

Start Saturday at Fred’s Backside Deli, part of the iconic Fred’s General Mercantile.

Fred’s Mercantile

Grab breakfast, then spend a little time wandering through the general store before heading out for the day.

SNOW DAY | Skiing or Tubing

You have two options today.

If you didn’t get enough skiing Friday, head back to Beech Mountain Resort for another day on the slopes.

Or switch things up and book a snow-tubing session. It’s an especially good option if you’re traveling with people who don’t want another full ski day.

AFTERNOON | Banner Elk

Head down the mountain to Banner Elk, the small town just below Beech Mountain. There isn’t a ton to do, but it’s absolutely worth a quick stop to walk around, grab a coffee or drink, browse a few shops, and see another side of the High Country.

Banner Elk, NC

SATURDAY NIGHT | Cabin Night

Grab takeout or cook something easy at the cabin, open a bottle of wine, turn on the fireplace, and get in the hot tub if your rental has one.

SUNDAY | ONE LAST MOUNTAIN MORNING

Make coffee at the cabin, enjoy the view one last time, and have a slow morning before packing up.

Check out of your cabin and head down the mountain to Banner Elk before starting the drive home. Stop by Banner Elk Shirt Company, where you can browse hundreds of shirts and designs and create your own custom souvenir to take home. With so many combinations to choose from, it’s a fun little stop—and way better than grabbing another generic souvenir.

Then it’s one last look at the mountains and time to head home.

Thanks for coming along! Whether you follow the whole itinerary or just steal a stop or two, we hope this makes planning your next weekend away a little easier. Save this guide for later, share it with your travel partner, and check back for more places worth adding to your list.
