A Fall Weekend in Georgia’s Little German Town
THE WEEKEND LIST | HELEN, GA
Best for: September–November
Perfect for: 2–3 nights
FRIDAY | CHECKING IN
If you prefer a hotel, Valhalla Resort Hotel is going to be the perfect place for a weekend getaway. With beautiful view of the fall foliage, guests recommend the mountain-view balcony suite.
For a little more privacy, trade a hotel for a mountain cabin just outside of downtown Helen. Look around Sautee Nacoochee or along the Chattahoochee River for beautiful homes of various sizes offering hot tubs, mountain or river views, and outdoor activities.
Dinner | Bodensee Restaurant
Make your first meal properly German. Bodensee specializes in traditional German cooking, including house-made spaetzle, schnitzel and sauerbraten. For our Weekend List order, I’d do schnitzel + spaetzle. Reservations are worth making for a fall weekend.
After dinner, don’t schedule much. Walk through downtown Helen, wander the shops along the river and have a drink before heading back to the hotel. Fall weekends here can get busy, so Friday night is perfect for getting the lay of the land.

SATURDAY | THE FULL HELEN DAY
Breakfast | Hofer’s of Helen
Start at Hofer’s, the long-running Bavarian bakery and café. I’d keep breakfast fairly simple because we’re eating our way through town all day: coffee + something from the bakery case.
Morning | Anna Ruby Falls

Drive out to Anna Ruby Falls after breakfast. The paved trail to the falls is a short 0.4 mile hike that takes you to the point where Curtis and York Creeks form the twin waterfalls. There is a small day-use fee, and it’s always worth checking current hours before heading out.
Then head back into Helen for lunch.
Lunch | Müller’s Famous Fried Cheese Cafe
This is where we order the thing the restaurant is actually famous for: fried cheese.
Weekend List order: Fried cheese to share + Jäger Schnitzel & Spätzle.
SATURDAY AFTERNOON | WINE + WANDERING
After lunch, give yourself a couple of hours to actually enjoy Helen: walk the riverfront, browse the Bavarian-style shops and grab anything you want to take home.
Then drive just outside downtown to Creekstone Winery.

Just a short drive from downtown Helen, Creekstone Winery is a quieter, more scenic alternative to the bustle of town. Set in the Sautee Nacoochee Valley, the tasting room pairs North Georgia wines with beautiful mountain and vineyard views. Grab a tasting or a glass, find a spot overlooking the valley, and give yourself an hour or two to slow down—it’s an especially pretty stop during fall when the mountains start changing color.
SATURDAY NIGHT | ONE MORE GERMAN MEAL
I’d go to The Heidelberg for the atmosphere rather than trying to find something completely different.
Start with a giant German-style pretzel, then order schnitzel with spaetzle. Then wander downtown one last time before heading back to your lodging.
SUNDAY | SLOW MORNING
Before leaving town, stop at Betty’s Country Store.

This one absolutely stays on our list. Grab breakfast or a deli sandwich for the road, browse the German imports and pick up snacks for the drive home. A 2026 visitor specifically called out the sandwiches as large enough to take leftovers, while another praised the bratwurst on the patio.
Thanks for coming along! Whether you follow the whole itinerary or just steal a stop or two, we hope this makes planning your next weekend away a little easier. Save this guide for later, share it with your travel partner, and check back for more places worth adding to your list.
See you for our next trip,
